Q&A with Stalham Infant and Junior Schools

How did you first become interested in chemistry or science?
I was always naturally inquisitive to understand the world around me. A standout moment was when I was in GCSE Chemistry and I was taught by an inspirational teacher, Dr Beard. He was innovative in his teaching and had a great impact on many pupils. I will always remember his explanation of the forming of tectonic plates using the heating of milk to understand and explore such a big phenomenon. As well as this, he also encouraged us to write song lyrics about what we had learned in GCSE Chemistry to Katy Perry’s song track, which was cool at the time!

What motivates you?
We are motivated by the passionate and engaged children we work with who are enthused about their learning. The children plan their scientific enquiries before exploring the outcomes with little facilitation – they have the confidence to use their creativity to plan investigations using their scientific knowledge. The joy and excitement they exude because of their discoveries is a joy to witness.Rebecca Lamb and Laura Smith

Who or what has inspired you?
As a Parent, Teacher Association of Stalham Infant and Junior Schools, we are inspired to help, fund and support the teachers’ magnificent work within science at our schools. The children’s and teachers’ passion for the subject is demonstrated during opportunities they partake in, for example, science experiments, science workshops and our favourite, The Science Shows, which provide a wonderful experience for all the children and their families. These also provide opportunities for the children to become scientists with a wide range of activities to enjoy. Mrs Mcallister and Mrs Powley: Friends of Stalham Schools

What has been a highlight for you (either personally or in your career)?
We see the result of a school fully supportive of an inquiry-led approach, supporting children in taking ownership of their learning. A learning community of staff and families are working together towards a common goal, seeing the fruits of this partnership in the children’s (and their families) love of science. Our science community events are full of families keen and eager to engage in science with us. The Staff of Stalham Infant and Junior Schools.
