Jhuma Sadhukhan
University of Surrey
Biography
Professor Jhuma Sadhukhan FREng, FRSC, FIChemE, CEng and CSci is a world-renowned engineer, academic, and a leading global authority in life cycle assessment (LCA), biorefinery design, and circular bioeconomies. Her work focuses on transforming industrial and municipal waste into sustainable biochemicals and materials. Her pioneering research has reshaped international standards, influenced government decarbonisation policies, and shaped the national Engineering Biology Mission. Her stellar contributions earned her election as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), alongside consecutive University of Surrey Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Researcher of the Year in 2024 and Public Engagement in 2025. Professor Jhuma Sadhukhan authored the leading textbook in her field, titled Biorefineries and Chemical Processes: Design, Integration and Sustainability Analysis. Her research on industrial decarbonisation centers on transitioning traditional, carbon-heavy industrial clusters into net-zero, circular systems, e.g., Flue2Chem winning the UK National Net-Zero Industry Innovation Outstanding Project Award at COP30. Her approach blends advanced digital technology, chemical engineering, and synthetic biology to eliminate waste emissions.
