The Costing of Chemical Processes

This introductory course aims to help chemists, engineers and project managers understand, value and apply an economic “costing” assessment to chemical development processes, whilst such processes are still under development. It will introduce some general principles and issues involved in economic assessments and explain terms typically used, before presenting the concept of optimisation based on cost instead of yield. After this introduction, several worked examples focussing on different aspects of costs will be given in detail, showing how it can be used to identify which features to focus upon for improvement in early development. Specific benefits will be illustrated in further examples showing how the costing process has helped to direct route selection, improve yields, reduce reagents, solvents, volume, energy usage and waste, and will include some examples with known cost savings from actual production plants across the chemical industry.

There will be scope for both planned and spontaneous interaction (Q&A).
