Smog, Stories and Solutions: 70 Years since the UK Clean Air Act
This summer marked the 70th anniversary of the UK Clean Air Act - a landmark piece of legislation that transformed the air that we breathe. To mark the occasion, this open public meeting brings together historians, scientists, and policymakers to explore where we've come from, where we are now, and what still needs to change. Talks will cover the history of air pollution in London and beyond, the health and societal effects of air pollution, the global picture of air quality today and future challenges. The meeting will be opened by Baroness Jenny Jones who is currently steering the new Clean Air (Human Rights) Bill through Parliament. All talks will be accessible to a non-expert audience and are intended to spark conversation. The event is part of a wider programme marking the anniversary, which includes a special issue of the journal Atmospheric Science Letters, wider public engagement activities, and art installations exploring air quality through knitting and personal stories.
