Explore the Science behind Art & Nature!

Join us at the Land of Oak & Iron Heritage Centre for a fun and fascinating day of discovery with the Royal Society of Chemistry and Northumbria University.

Dive into fascinating interactive activities featuring:

  • Creative Chemistry
  • Smells, Fibres & Forensics
  • Natural Materials & their Hidden Secrets
  • Calligraphy Sessions
  • DIY Wrapping Paper Stations

Discover how the natural world helps us create fibres, fabrics, inks and art — then have a go yourself!

We will also have ‘Cabinet of Natural Curiosities’ with ornithologist and naturalist Michael Turner.  A fine collection of meteorites, fossils, skulls, Victorian butterflies, dinosaur teeth, corals, shells, insects, feathers, Neolithic flints and many other fascinating artefacts from around the world!

This free event is great fun for all ages (including the grown‑ups). No need to book — just turn up and take part in making chemistry!
